Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops trncatus)
The many species of dolphins, like the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin seen at the National Aquarium
in Baltimore, are actually small toothed whales. Best known of the dolphin species, the bottlenose
has received much attention on its exploits and intelligence. The total length of a bottlenose dolphin can measure up to twelve feet, with an average weight between 500 and 1,200 pounds. It can swim up to speeds of 14 knots and dive for more than 6 to 7 minutes, where it feeds on a variety fishes, squid, shrimps and crabs.
