26x Jefferson National Expansion Memorial was established as a National Park in 1935 to commemorate the westward expansion of the United States. Designed by architect Eero Saarinen in 1947, the 630-foot Gateway Arch was built between 1963 and 1965. It stands as a monument to the city of St.Louis and the diverse group of people that played a role in opening the vast wilderness west of the Mississippi.
